Old vs New Tax Regime: Making the Right Financial Decision #
Under recent Finance Act updates, the New Tax Regime (Section 115BAC) is the default tax regime in India. However, taxpayers still retain the option to switch back to the Old Tax Regime if their deductions and investments warrant it.

2. The Breakeven Threshold #
The decision boils down to your total eligible deductions:
-
If your total deductions (80C + 80D + HRA + Home Loan Interest) exceed ₹3.75 Lakhs to ₹4.25 Lakhs (depending on your salary bracket), the Old Tax Regime will typically save you more money.
-
If your total deductions are under ₹3.5 Lakhs, the New Tax Regime almost always results in a lower tax outflow and requires zero paperwork or investment proof submission!
3. Rule for Business Owners & Professionals #
Salaried individuals can choose between the old and new regime every year at the time of filing their ITR.
However, individuals with Business or Professional Income (ITR-3 or ITR-4) can only switch regimes once in their lifetime. Once you opt out of the new regime, you can only re-enter it once, and then you are locked in.
